Published in 1925, The Great Gatsby is a novel set during the Roaring Twenties, exploring themes of wealth, illusion, love, and the decay of the American Dream. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young Yale graduate who moves to Long Island, New York, and becomes entangled in the world of the mysterious and fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is known for throwing extravagant parties in his opulent mansion, but no one seems to know much about him. As Nick gets to know Gatsby, he discovers that Gatsby’s fortune and lifestyle are all part of an obsessive attempt to win back his lost love, Daisy Buchanan, who lives across the bay with her husband, Tom Buchanan, a wealthy and arrogant aristocrat. Despite Gatsby’s efforts, Daisy is unwilling or unable to fully leave her privileged world behind. The story builds to a tragic climax involving betrayal, illusion, and death—ultimately exposing the emptiness at the heart of the characters’ glittering lives.
